Sunbridgewells -Wallers Brewery

From dungeons in the 1700s to an unlicensed nightclub during the swinging 60s, Sunbridge Wells has had what can be called an ‘interesting past’ clever use of old cellars and tunnels.

Originally a quarry in the thirteenth century, Bradford's underground tunnels were later used as prison cells. The tunnels and cellars have a long and varied history, having also been used as part of a brewery in the 19th and early 20th centuries and then as an air raid shelter in the Second World War.

Despite having already fallen in to dereliction and being used for the dumping of rubble in the 1950s part of the premises were briefly opened in the 1960s, they became a Northern Soul and live music venue called the "Little Fat Black Pussy Cat" club feature appearances from The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles.

Sunbridge Wells, built underground in the heart of the city. It is based in a series of tunnels that have been disused and forgotten about for years, but now hosts a number of bars, restaurants and booths. The site is becoming a tourist attraction due to its unique features and history behind the tunnels. Sunbridgewells is a labyrinth of passages and tunnels, making it unique to the city and beyond.

The first phase of the project opened in December 2016 and was "officially" opened by the Princess Royal in June 2017.
